چکیده

Almost all the X-ray afterglows of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) observed by the Swift satellite have a shallow decay phase in the first thousands of seconds. We show that in an inhomogeneous jet (multiple-subjet or patchy-shell) model the superposition of the afterglows of off-axis subjets (patchy shells) can have the shallow decay phase. The necessary condition for obtaining the shallow decay phase is that γ-ray bright subjets (patchy shells) should have γ-ray efficiency higher than previously estimated, and should be surrounded by γ-ray dim subjets (patchy shells) with low γ-ray efficiency. Our model predicts that events with dim prompt emission have the conventional afterglow light curve without the shallow decay phase like GRB 050416A. Tail emission from a ring - like jet : its application to shallow decays of early afterglows and to GRB 050709

Similar to the pulsar, the magnetic axis and the spin axis of the gamma-ray burst source may not lie on the same line. This may cause a ring-like jet. We analyze the tail emission from such a jet, and find that it has a shallow decay phase with temporal index equal to −1/2 if the Lorentz factor of the ejecta is not very high. This phase is consistent with the shallow decay phase of early X-ray ...

Evidence for an anticorrelation between the duration of the shallow decay phase of GRB X-ray afterglows and redshift

Context. One of the most intriguing features discovered by Swift is a plateau phase in the X-ray flux decay of about 70% of the afterglows of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). The physical origin of this feature is still being debated. Aims. We constrain the proposed interpretations, based on the intrinsic temporal properties of the plateau phase. Methods. We selected and analyzed all the Swift/XRT GRB ...

The Very Early Gamma-ray Burst Afterglows Powered by Structured Jets

If X-ray flashes (XRFs) and X-ray rich Gamma-ray Bursts(XRRGs) have the same origin with Gamma-ray Bursts (GRBs) but are viewed from larger angles of structured jets, their early afterglows may differ from those of GRBs. When the ultra-relativistic outflow interact with the surrounding medium, there are two shocks formed, one is a forward shock, the other is a reverse shock. In this paper we ca...

Efficiency Crisis of Swift Gamma-Ray Bursts with Shallow X-ray Afterglows: Prior Activity or Time-Dependent Microphysics?

Most X-ray afterglows of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) observed by the Swift satellite have a shallow decay phase ∝ t in the first thousands of seconds. We discuss that the shallow decay requires an unreasonably high gamma-ray efficiency, & 75–90%, within current models, which is difficult to be produced by internal shocks. Such a crisis may be avoided if a weak relativistic explosion occurs ∼ 10–10 ...

Physical Processes Shaping Gamma-ray Burst X-ray Afterglow Light Curves: Theoretical Implications from the Swift X-ray Telescope Observations

With the successful launch of the Swift Gamma-Ray Burst Explorer, a rich trove of early X-ray afterglow data has been collected by its onboard X-Ray Telescope (XRT). Some interesting features are emerging, including a distinct rapidly decaying component preceding the conventional afterglow component in many sources, a shallow decay component before the more ‘‘normal’’ decay component observed i...
